MEETING
WITH BEAVERS
Ushuaia sunsets are definitely amazing. This is, besides, the only time
of the day that may offer the chance of seeing beavers. You therefore
come with us in our 4x4 to get to some "castorera" (beavers'
nest), driving through leafy forests and entangled roads. Mimetized with
the vegetation, we expectantly wait the moment to see them. After we have
lived the fascination of meeting these unbelievable engineers we move
to a small inn, where we start cooking a good patagonian stew, chatting
and enjoying some good wine while it gets ready. We can assure to you
that the perfume of our stew is almost irresistible, and that is why we
forbid that anybody gets close to the pot with a piece of bread in his/her
hand. This particular moment, lived under the southern twilight may seem
the best end for our meeting with beavers. But it is not so, because we
still have our return to Ushuaia with the last splendours of the day.
Can you imagine such a thing? Have no doubts, you must give yourself the
possibility of living Nature in a unique way, a way that only Canal and
you can share.

KAYAKING ON ROCA LAKE
They were hunters and fishermen, and only used a skin to defend themselves
from the rough climate. Other protection simply had to do with the fats
they ate: seals, fish, seafood, crabs or whales. They manufactured the
tips of their harpoons, their fishhooks and their knives with bones and
stones. They were called the Yámanas and were the first ones to
inhabit, about six thousand years ago, what we today call the Beagle Channel.
Their canoes were extremely simple, made with solidly fastened tree-bark
and with a fire on the prow, on a base of sand. Without the warmth of
that fire, they would have met death day after day. We let you know this
in case you are worried whether weather will be too cold or if a small
wave might wet you.
Canal will show you some of these impressive landscapes - many of them
almost intact - in the way the Yámanas did: navigating in canoes,
through non-difficult rivers, watching an immense quantity and variety
of birds, and letting you have an idea of Ushuaia's first inhabitants.
Kayaking is a tour planned for anybody willing to do some sport. Come
on, this is a unique experience in an absolutely amazing surrounding.
You will eventually get dry, but the remembrances and the experience will
stay forever.

TREKKING IN THE NATIONAL PARK
¿Would you dare to trek through the last forests of the world?
Would you dare to sail amongst the most impressive landscapes? Breathing
the purest air, we learn everything about past and present Ushuaia. A
few hours later we embark on a zodiac and, surrounded by seals, which
swim alongside our boat, we get to the Redonda Island. We have there a
tasty lunch and enjoy some free time, which helps us to give stillness
its true value. We then get back to our zodiac to arrive to our next destination,
the Lapataia Bay. This means the end of the Pan-American Highway, the
southernmost place in the world you can get to by route. There, where
the world ends, starts a unique experience combining sea, mountains, Nature
and fun.

OTHERS EXCURSIONS
Sailing Patagonian Adventure, Beagle Channel (All year round).
The boat&Mac226;s name is Mendietta; it is an american troller 9m
(29 feet) long, and it accommodates up to18 passengers. You should not
lose the chance of sailing the Beagle in a small vessel. The trip includes
the Isla de los Lobos (Wolves Island), Isla de los Pájaros (Birds
Island) and the "Les Eclaireurs" Lighthouse. The difference
between this trip and the ones in bigger vessels is that it lets you get
closer to the different places and therefore be able to watch the beautiful
southern species in detail.
Horse-back Rides (all year round)
This tour lets you know (and use) the old paths used by the Ushuaia Prison
convicts, when they had to work in the forest. As we ride higher we get
astounding panoramic views of the city, Beagle Channel, Ushuaia Peninsula
and Navarino Island. We leave behind the luxuriant vegetation of the subantarctic
woods (lengas, guindos, canelos and other species) On the way back to
our original starting point, we will wade the Pipo River. This tour offers
the visitor a very rich experience both in Nature and History.
Trekking Laguna Esmeralda (Emerald Lagoon) (Summer only)
This is a very easy trekking tour, suitable for everybody interested in
knowing Tierra del Fuego&Mac226;s Natural and Landscape Reservation.
Our starting point is the mountain refuge Nunatak, and we must go thorough
a peat bog to arrive at a millennial forest. This unbelievable view also
includes lengas and cohiues, decorated with moss and lichen At the end
of the forest stands the Esmeralda Lagoon. The color of the water and
the surrounding landscape are an invitation to stop and enjoy lunch at
its shore.
Trekking in the Ojo del Albino Glacier (Summer only).
This is a demanding trek, not suitable for everybody, but definitely for
anybody in good physical condition, who enjoys trekking and wants to have
fun. This tour includes the one to the Emerald Lagoon, adding a trek to
the main tributary of the lagoon, which is born in the Ojo del Albino
Glacier. This Glacier is on the lagoon itself &Mac246; size aside,
it is similar to the Perito Moreno, but without bridges and, above all,
without crowds!. It is really impressive to have such a view just for
ourselves, without a soul miles around. We get to the Glacier and get
a dreamlike view of mountains and ice. We put on shoe-clamps and start
the exploration of the Glacier until reaching the Beban balcony, where
we have lunch (Lunch Box) and then continue our trekking, with several
stops at breathtaking panoramic view sites. You may rest assured that
the effort is really worth while.
Harberton Ranch and Penguins (Summer only).
Driving through Route 3 we will get to a side road, alongside which flows
the beautiful Larsoparsahk river. Behind the river looms Cornu Mount,
the highest in Tierra del Fuego (around 4500 ft), as a kind of huge sentinel.
We will really enjoy Nature and the Andes Fueguinos on our way to the
Harberton ranch, the first in Tierra del Fuego, established in 1886. We
will visit the Main House, the hill with unbeatable views of the Beagle
Channel and the Picton and Navarino Islands, the Park and Cemetery, reproductions
of Yámana Indians huts, Yámana archaelogical sites and the
shearing shed, where we will watch the work being done with sheep. Once
the visit is over, we shall board a modern zodiac to sail the Beagle Channel.
We will get close to the Isla Martillo (Hammer Island), where we will
be able to watch a colony of Penguins, not only of the Magellean variety
but also Ribbon Penguins. Since the boat is quite small, we will be able
to watch the penguins from a very short distance. Absolutely allured by
the landscape, we will continue our adventure watching a very wide variety
of regional fauna and flora. After navigating for about an hour, we will
get back to the Ranch and board a van to return to Ushuaia. This tour
does not include meals, and we therefore recommend to get some snack in
town before departure.
White Adventure (Winter only)
We go from Ushuaia to the Tierra Mayor (Main Land) Valley (10 Miles North
of Ushuaia). Somebody is waiting for us with Siberians or Alaskan dogs-driven
sleighs. Passengers willing to do it, have the chance of driving the sleighs.
We take a ride of about 10 miles through the valley until we get to a
camping site, where we change our means of transport. We put on our snow
raquets and trek through an hour and a half until we get to the frozen
falls of Laguna Esmeralda (Emerald Lagoon). Unbelievable!!! We camp here
and drink some hot chocolate. Pure magic!!!
Snow and Fire (Winter only)
This is dinner in the mid of a very beautiful snowed valley. At sunset
time we get to the place where our banquet will be held, trekking with
snow rackets until we get to a fireplace in the mid of a millennial forest.
The entrance to the "dining hall" is flanked by torches and
the fire-place is prepared inside a huge snow hole. We will enjoy the
warmth while we sit on tree-logs beside the fire. Our dinner will be exquisite
sirloin brochettes and a country-style stew cooked in an old pot hanging
from a tripod. Dessert: roast apples. We will stay chatting once meal
is over and having fun until it is completely dark. Strongly recommended!
We return to the hotel when we start becoming sleepy, well fed and happy.
